トライグラムロボットSUMOは、各チーム2名の参加学生と1〜2名のコーチング講師によるチーム形式で実施されます。 小学校と中学校の2つのカテゴリーがあります。 参加する生徒は、大会当日に小学校または中等学校に在籍している必要があります。 競技場は直径2.8メートルの円形のプラットフォームです。プラットフォームは地上約35センチメートルで、ロボットのスタートエリアは端から50センチメートル離れた台形です。準備ラインの内側からプラットフォームの端までがロボットのスタートエリアで、各チームのロボットが向かい合って配置されています。
